Chapter 6: Amazing Grace

Violet sat down on her white suede sectional and thought about what she was doing. If she didn't do this right, she would never be able to forgive herself. She wasn't just worried about the salvation of her friend and her pastor, she was worried about the entire congregation. They thought that man was a man of God who wanted to help others, and she knew he was, but they would lose faith in him and what he was saying if they found out he was having an affair.

It was her duty to do something about this. At the same time, she was worried. Maybe she couldn't do enough. She got up off the couch and went into her kitchen to get a wine glass. Jesus turned water into wine, and she believed that so long as she only used it in moderation it was OK.

The rich red flavor helped clear her head. She was a caretaker. She'd been watching her brainless best friend get herself into trouble since they were teenagers, and somehow she always found a way to help her get her senses back. She was a smart girl, but she didn't think about things the way she should. She let herself get dragged around by her desire instead of her head and that moved her in the wrong direction.

She wasn't just the voice of reason. There were plenty of times that Violet had to rescue her. When they were in college, she had a crush on the star quarter back and he took her to a party and got her so drunk she didn't even know where she was. Violet had to drive across town and fight off several horny football players to get her out of there.

Celine was going to have to go this one alone. She was going to get some advice then call it quits because this fire was too hot to touch.

Violet pulled out her phone and called the church. She could hear the phone shuffling around and Delilah's voice in the background. After a minute she heard, “Uh, hello?” She sounded like she wasn't sure how to use the old thing.

“Hi, Delilah. How are you?”

“I'm sorry. I'm having some trouble hearing you.” The old woman hung up the phone and Violet got so mad she practically drove down there and gave her a good tongue lashing.

God had placed a great burden in her hands. She had to remember that. Celine wasn't the only one asking her to do this—He was. She had a responsibility and she couldn't turn her back on her friend.

She picked up her phone and started again.

“Hello,” Delilah answered coherently this time.

“Hello, I'm trying t—

“Could you speak up dear?”

“I'm trying to make an appointment for counseling!”

“I'm sorry, but the women's retreat is all filled up this year.”

“No. Not the women's retreat.”

“Not the retreat?” Delilah was yelling now.

“Counseling!”

“Oh, counseling. I'll see you at two then.” She hadn't even set a time and Delilah was already telling her when to come.
